Like the lady mamas of Girlicious are to the hoochie skanks of Pussycat Dolls, so too are the bastard offspring The Saturdays to their queenly counterparts, Girls Aloud. Even though they’re pegged to be leading off the girl group rampage of the new year, I’ve only got one leg on board this project so far. Above is the video for The Saturdays’ debut single, “If This Is Love.” Meh. If nothing else, it’s nice to see such a multi-cultural band in existence, and gives us a well needed glimpse into the future when the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie brood decide to create a six piece indie-rock unit in their mid-twenties.
There’s a lot of neon, pumps, and slow-mo pouting which are all needed qualities to off-set the song’s mediocre melody. Perhaps I’m being too harsh, but when you’re waddling into Aloud territory, you’ve got to ruffle your feathers bigger than this. With higher heels, too.
