It’s moment we’ve been waiting for…
Now, here’s the thing: I think Britney could have pushed it much further. For all the hoopla surrounding such a “sexy” video (thanks for the overhype, mainstream media!),”Amy” is truly no more naughty than “Boys,” “I’m A Slave 4 U,” or even “Do Somethin.'” Sure, the song’s not nearly as innocuous, but the video ultimately proves to be barely blush-worthy. Let’s face it–we’ve already seen the skin exposure, suggestive choreography (done better, I’m afraid), and sex-me faces in past videos time and time again…and I’d barely call this a risky departure.
(Actually, the “Sweet Dreams” interlude of The Circus: Starring Britney Spears is still far more suggestive, and I probably would have preferred an extended version of that instead.)
That being said, “If U Seek Amy” still provides for a fun little trip and does have its moments. Britney looks great, for starters–and so do those Christian Louboutins.
Ultimately however, the overarching message will prove itself as the defining moment of “Amy;” a seething critique of the critics. The opening and closing FOX News mocks are perhaps the greatest victory of the entire video, using the actual transcript of one frazzled talking heads‘ rant against the indecency of “If U Seek Amy.”
She’s been grilled by every newscaster, gossip columnist, and outraged mother since her debut in 1998…What else is there to do but throw it right back into their faces? Britney comes strolling out in full on Conserva-wear and, after being joined by her Mattel-friendly 2.5 children nuclear family, delivers the wanting paparazzi a freshly baked pie…because that’s what everybody wants, isn’t it?
The bitterness is nearly palpable from behind that pearly white grin.
EDIT: Each replay of the video increases its enjoyability factor by approximately 10%. Fact.
