From the moment we first caught wind of “Thirsty” when it spilled from Mimi‘s lips during a radio interview in February, the Lambily has been (appropriately) thirsting for a taste of the Hit-Boy-produced Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse anthem for months.
Today, our thirst has been quenched, courtesy of a surprise first play during The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 FM.
Although the radio rip quality’s a bit shit, “Thirsty” is clearly a messy urban delight, as the Thirst-Free Chanteuse lays down the law across some “Pour It Up”-like trap hi-hats and a twinkling #SomethingMoreUrban beat, a la Hit-Boy’s own “Ni**as in Paris” for Kanye and Jay Z: “You used to be Mr. ‘All About We’/Now you’re just thirsty for celebrity,” Mimi sasses. “You thirsty for a dream…leaving me drowning.” Rich Homie Quan appears later on the track, despite his lack of inclusion on the tracklisting. Which is…huh?
Anyway, this is the most radio-friendly serving from Me. I Am Mariah since “#Beautiful.” And after supplying us with sumptuous ballads like “The Art Of Letting Go” and “You’re Mine (Eternal)”, it’s nice to hear Mimi kickin’ it into urban banga mode — it’s very “Migrate” in a way.
For the thirsty queen in your life (and please believe, there are many), this is the refreshing moment you’ll need to get ’em rehydrated. Care for a sip?
Uh, you’re thirsty.
Uh, you’re thirsty.
UH, YOU’RE THIRSTY.
UPDATE: The solo version of “Thirsty” has (mercifully) surfaced in full, sans obnoxious radio hosts and rappers — and it is a glorious thing. “So you stunting on your Instagram, but that shhh ain’t everything.” The patronizing bridge is something extra special, too — “booooossssss now, you’re trying to be a boooossssss now…” Shut down, Mimi style. Pour yourself a glass, ’cause uh, you’re thirsty…
‘Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse’ will be released on May 27. (iTunes)
