“You Don’t Know What To Do”: Mariah Carey Has A Retro Moment Of Disco Whatever

Everyone knows that the first rule of revealing a not-so-surprise “all-at-once” album experience is to release one song per week on the radio.

Last week, having already dropped “#Beautiful,” “The Art Of Letting Go” and “Eternal (You’re Mine)”, five-octave range-bearing Elusive Chanteuse Mariah Carey stopped by Power 105.1 to premiere “Thirsty,” her messy, Hit-Boy-produced thirst anthem.

Now, following the song’s live premiere on The Today Show last week, the legendary diva’s “You Don’t Know What To Do” has just hit radio airwaves this morning.

Kicking off with a dramatically oversung, piano-led intro (think Donna Summer‘s intro for “On The Radio” — SAAAAAAANG, girl!), the fierce disco throwback soon comes bursting into the speakers.

Armed with a joyous pulse, soaring strings and a funky backing beat similar to Beyoncé‘s retro 4 ode “Love On Top,” Mimi’s feeling herself right now as she tosses her man to the curb and misplaces all of her fucks. “Baby you don’t know what, you don’t know what to do!” she taunts on the euphoric earworm of a chorus. (Oh, and Wale‘s on the song too. Eh.)

Y’know wuh? It’s really a shame that “You Don’t Know What To Do” didn’t premiere earlier into the Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse campaign, because this is the kind of song that has the potential to grab radio’s attention. It’s a smash — especially because of Top 40 radio’s rediscovered love for disco.

But, whatever. It’s here. Now let’s dance, daahhhhhlings!
