Sevyn Streeter‘s “It Won’t Stop” was, undeniably, one of my favorite songs of 2013. (And it’s such a jam, still.)
After dropping her debut Call Me Crazy, But… EP back in December of that year, the talented singer-songwriter, who has written for everyone from Ariana Grande to Kelly Rowland, delivered one more single from the mini-collection last year “nEXt (Remix) (feat. Kid Ink)” before hitting the studio to work on her major label debut.
And now, the first taste of her upcoming 2015 LP has arrived: “Don’t Kill The Fun” featuring longtime mentor Chris Brown…and it’s the opposite of a buzzkill.
Like much of her own music, the genre-blurring production is pretty unlike anything else out on pop radio at the moment: This time around, Sevyn’s serving up chill synths, tripping drums, smooth and sultry R&B melodies, Breezy’s assist and zany horn riffs aplenty — or is that an accordion? She herself described it as a “fuse of ’90s house music and today’s trappier, ratchet-y drums” to Fader. Tempo shifts. Swerving sounds. It’s a bit of a kitchen sink, yet it all somehow works together quite nicely.
A fun listen? For sure, and it’s even more fun imagining what Sevyn might come up with next.
“Don’t Kill The Fun (feat. Chris Brown)” will be released on January 13. (iTunes)
