Giorgio Moroder, disco icon, is responsible for crafting some of the most iconic releases of the past century, including Donna Summer‘s “I Feel Love,” Blondie‘s “Call Me” and Irene Cara‘s “Flashdance… What a Feeling.”
Sia, singing-songwriting legend, is responsible for penning and singing some of the most iconic releases of the past decade, including David Guetta‘s “Titanium,” Rihanna‘s “Diamonds,” Beyoncé‘s “Pretty Hurts” and Britney‘s “Perfume.” (And Christina Aguilera‘s Bionic ballads, including “You Lost Me,” most importantly.)
Therefore, it’s not particularly a surprise that the long-awaited pairing between these two titans would result in something good. It’s so good, in fact, that Giorgio opted to name his entire record after the song.
“Déjà Vu” is pure euphoria: It plays like a sweet, nostalgic memory — and undoubtedly will supply the soundtrack to many of those this summer — as will “Right Here, Right Now,” and the entirety of Moroder’s upcoming record.
Some random points of excellence:
1.) “Potions, lotions…perfume.” BRITNEY REFERENCE.
2.) “Good things come to those who wait/I think I found my baybeh!” Clearly a second, subtle reference to Britney and the Army anticipating her left-lane cover of “Tom’s Diner” — which is certainly worth that wait. WINKY FACE EMOJI.
3.) The genius of the term “Déjà Vu” — “a feeling of having already experienced the present situation” — being used as the title of Giorgio Moroder’s first producer record in over 30 years.
4.) “Déjà Vuuuuuu.” Sia’s belting skills are unparalleled in pop, but it’s that sweetly cooed “vuuuu” that will get likely stuck in your head the longest.
5.) Those joyous, “Get Lucky”-esque licks! Sia’s almighty vocal delivery! The pure and utter joy of disco!
We should all be very excited about Déjà Vu, an album with the potential to sneakily snatch the crown for the year.
