Tinashe‘s been on a wave.
While her personal life is no one’s business but her own, it’s hard to ignore the fact that her name’s been popping up in headlines everywhere due to recent, erm, developments in her love life.
Whether her new track, “Like I Used To,” which dropped on Friday (July 13) is a response to the situation at hand or just a very conveniently timed, basketball reference-laced kiss-off (“I got to pass on you“), who really knows?
Most importantly, it’s great.
Produced by Smash David and Hitmaka, the trap-tinged midtempo finds Tinashe – Miss Nashe, if you’re nasty – keeping her cool, collecting her bag and keeping it moving in one chilly dismissal. The hurt is palpable…but she’s not giving this guy the satisfaction of a teary-eyed goodbye. (As for the track itself: it’s a solid mix of the moodier vibes of her mixtape days and the more mainstream hip-pop slant of her recent stuff.)
“Gave up all my love but you abused it / Now you’re just something I checked off my to-do list,” she numbly sings, shrugging off the dud. “I had to let go / Never touch you like I used to / I got to pass on you…”
Whether she’s passing on a certain athlete, swerving into a new lane after Joyride or all of the above, one thing’s for sure: Tinashe’s not about to look back.
