STEPS Something In Your Eyes

STEPS Feel the ABBA Fantasy on “Something In Your Eyes”

The pop troupe leans into the ABBA comparisons with a euphoric, Eurovision-ready banger.

“A rainy cold November night, you came to me…”

STEPS made a thunderous return in September with their appropriately anxious-on-the-dance-floor anthem “What the Future Holds,” then gave us a glimpse into their softer side on the follow-up, “Under My Skin.”

And now, they’re unleashing their full ABBA fury.

Constantly catching comparisons to the legendary co-ed pop troupe for the past two decades (as well as tackling Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus‘s “Story of a Heart” just a few years ago on Tears on the Dancefloor), the group’s leaned in entirely with the glorious “Something in Your Eyes,” released on Tuesday (October 27) ahead of What the Future Holds.

The camp stomper provides all of the surging ABBA spirit, and sounds like a winning entry for Eurovision – because it almost was: “Something in Your Eyes” was originally released by Jenny Silver during Melodifestivalen 2011, before (rudely) being knocked out of the competition after the first semifinal.

Luckily, STEPS are also known for giving relatively obscure songs a polish and doing them proper justice, as is the case with this euphoric cover (that key change!), largely vocally helmed by the leading ladies themselves: Claire Richards, Faye Tozer and, of course, Our Lisa Scott-Lee.

The song could easily slip into the eventual live set on the What the Future Holds Tour right between cuts like “One for Sorrow” and “Last Thing on My Mind” (and maybe on next year’s inevitably virtual Eurovision stage), and feels like an instant, obvious, unstoppable, simply irresistible STEPS classic to add to the catalog from the very first play.

What the Future Holds will be released on November 27.
