“Now it’s 11:59 / We’re on the edge of a Saturday night…”
Kylie Minogue knows how to have a good time.
After what’s felt like months of being teased and edged mercilessly with footage of the two getting rowdy behind the DJ booth at Circoloco in Ibiza, our Mighty Aphrodite and the Club Future Nostalgia maestro have finally unleashed their “Edge of Saturday Night,” featured on The Blessed Madonna’s upcoming debut album Godspeed, out on October 11.
“Edge of Saturday Night is now yours,” she and The Blessed Madonna declared on Wednesday (August 14).
“This is a song about edges: writing on the edge of lockdown, writing lyrics on the edge of being new people, on the edge of levelling up as artists. Well, it’s fitting that this song is about an equally important edge in my life. It was a morning that magically turned into night. It was a dawn when instead of the party ending, we shut the blinds and began again. It might have been a beautiful February Monday, but in a very special room in Berlin, we found ourselves again on the edge of a Saturday night.”
“Thank you to Jin for helping us write this. Thank you to Pat, Hen and Dance System for producing it with us. Thank you Grace, Eva, Sportsbanger and Harry. Thank you to you for listening. Now, shut the blinds. Let the music save your life. Maybe go six deep in a bathroom stall…”
Mercifully, the latest in what has become a seemingly endless, somewhat chaotic arsenal of post-Tension tag-teams – with Sia, Orville Peck, Diplo, Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo, among others – is one of Kylie’s best of this collaborative era yet.
The track harkens back to the more experimental dance floor delight of 2013’s ultra horny “Skirt,” and X-era bonus tracks like “Rippin’ Up the Disco” and “Cherry Bomb.” It’s even got the “Weird Kylie” spirit of one of her earliest left-of-center club collabs, “GBI (German Bold Italic)” with Towa Tei.
Kylie didn’t just come here to dance: this is a woman on a mission. She’s taking it six deep in the bathroom stalls, winding her waist ’round, getting down on the ground and crawling around because Monday doesn’t matter at all. (A typical night out for the bulk of her listening audience, to be fair. Ally!)
That breathy bridge after the second verse especially tells us she’s not fucking around, and she is neither interested in being mindful nor demure at the club: “In my bag now, Birkin, hold it / In my tracksuit, men still notice / Got my hair back, stay focused / Two glass of water, one drink token.”
Armed with some thoroughly fierce, fucked-up-and-still-fabulous verses (I mean: “I got a hot date with my mistakes” – what a line!), and a real shout-along, hands-aloft chant of a piano-led chorus (“I swear the rhythm ’bout to save my life!“), “Edge of Saturday Night” is an ode to one hell of a night out, and begs to be blared loud.
Now, if only there were some sort of long awaited, highly anticipated tour announcement to properly experience this mega-banger live. Drop those dates already, Miss Minogue…
