“I turn milk into butter, and butter into money / And with the money, honey, I create the life that I like.”
The Almighty Agnes is back. Not since the Norwegian Butter Crisis of 2011 has there been a bigger Scandinavian dairy-related panic.
After kicking off her forthcoming album era with “Balenciaga Covered Eyes” back in May, the “24 Hours” superstar is ready for Round 2 in the form of “Milk,” out on Friday (July 4).
Agnes is following up her fierce tears-on-the-dance-floor anthem with one hell of a milky mantra, supplying us with an affirmation that you and I and everyone we know should be reciting over and over until it becomes our shared reality.
“I turn milk into butter, and butter into money / And with the money, honey, I create the life that I like.”
It’s basically just that (great) lyric, repeated over and over again across an addictive beat, plus some powerful, diva-sized ad libs we’ve come to know and expect from the “Release Me” queen.
The song (and/or sermon) was written alongside Agnes collaborators Kerstin Ljungström, Frans Bryngel (The Weeknd), Hannah Wilson of The Pussycat Dolls‘ “React” (panic, I know), Vincent Pontare of Madonna‘s “Rebel Heart” (panic, I know.) And speaking of Her Madgesty, there’s something distinctly Confessions on a Dance Floor a la “Sorry” about the vocoder used on Agnes’ voice in “Milk.” Complimentary!
“It all started with a text that resembled a chant, which then built up and became MILK. It’s about a person who hungrily takes on life – someone who is guided by their inner compass, by creativity and pride,” Agnes says of the song.
“Ridiculous / Yeah, call it what you want / Delirious / No, I know what I want,” she insists. You know what? she’s absolutely right! And she should say it! Ask, believe, receive!
And if that chant of a chorus isn’t enough to get you to break out the ol’ butter churn and start building out your fantasy life, we’ve even got ourselves a little motivational speech towards the track’s grand finale.
“Your dreams says everythin’ about you (everything) / Your dreams is a measure of where life will take you (your life will take you) / So tap in (tap in), tune in (tune in), space out (space out), dream big (beautiful).”
It’s a banger about milk that’s as catchy as it is empowering – no Lactaid required.
