Quick question: do you want more, baby? Do you want more?
Don’t let the holiday weekend distract you from the fact that Norwegian Queen of Pop Annie is back in action – this time in collaboration with English-born, LA-based producer Chris Barratt, otherwise known as Eagles & Butterflies.
Almost exactly one year after swerving into the trance-pop lane and delivering one of the most gorgeous and devastating songs of 2024 (“The Sky Is Blue”), the “Breakfast Song” singer has opted to veer back towards the Italo Disco side of things in the form of “Next 2 U,” which dropped on Friday (July 4), via German label Permanent Vacation.
Per Bandcamp: “They combine their great pop sensibility with their passion for Disco and Italo to create the perfect blend of shimmering Disco Pop, rooted in club culture.”
The track comes in two different flavors: the original mix, which is a more sped-up, poppier take on the track, and a luscious club mix, which lets the song breathe a bit more and feels perfectly suited for a poolside soiree.
It’s armed with a Kylie-like “la-di-da” earworm, spacey synths, dreamy vocals, and a hypnotic four-on-the-floor pulse.
The producer explained on Instagram that he especially loved the piano featured on the track, and that it was inspired by maybe his “favorite electronic track ever”: the Thomas Bangalter remix of the late DJ Mehdi‘s “Signatune.” (What a flashback to the glory days of Ed Banger Records. Listen to it!)
It seems that Annie is really taking the label’s name to heart (eat your heart out, Miley and Dua), because she’s making her own getaway just as the song drops.
“Ladidadidada…it’s. summertime☀️❤️🔥and I hope you are all having a lovely summer wherever you are☀️🥂,” she wrote on Instagram.
“I’m just getting started with my holiday next week. And I guess this will be our holiday jam😄 I wrote this one together with the brilliant @eaglesandbutterflies . ‘Next 2U’ is out now on @permanentvacationrecords .The pop/club version.I hope you enjoy it..and have a lovely weekend too..❤️🔥.”
As per usual, Annie is physically incapable of missing the mark.
Slot this one in between the brilliant The A&R EP and the Endless Vacation EP, grab Anthonio, and get out on the dance floor.
