Diplo and Skrillex, together known as Jack Ü, have done The Surprise Drop Thing this evening and released their debut album, Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü.
And while there are plenty of collaborations to digest, including the Kiesza-assisted “Take Ü There” (and accompanying Missy Elliott remix), “Febreze” with 2 Chainz and “To Ü” with AlunaGeorge, there’s one song that requires your immediate attention: “Where Are Ü Now,” featuring everyone’s favorite egg-tossing Canadian underwear model, Justin Bieber. (And no, it’s not a Britney cover. Sadly.)
There’s really nothing not to love about the earnestly crooned tune, which plays like a dance floor Frankenstein monster of sorts: Gentle piano melodies, stu-stu-stuttering vocals, hi hats and strangely distant, sort of tribal-sounding beats weave together to create what is not a ballad, not yet a floor-filler.
Bieber’s voice is undeniably b(elieb)eautiful and sweetly lonesome, and the tag team duo’s production and tempo shifts are so frequent, there’s really no way to predict where the track’s heading next…in a great way.
These three should definitely Jack Ü off more often.
And that is how you do dance music that sounds fresh. Sorry ’bout it, Zeddlena.
Where are you now that I need you?
‘Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü’ was released on February 27. (iTunes)
