Selena Gomez is the latest pop tart to do the pretty girl rock with the premiere of her new single: “Who Says?”
The twangy self-empowerment anthem, which first premiered on On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday, finds the gorgeous Disney starlet (performing along with her band as Selena Gomez & The Scene) waxing inspirational on top of a gentle, mid-tempo guitar strum.
As with “Born This Way,” “Firework,” “We R Who We R,” “Raise Your Glass,” and every other positive pop anthem of the moment that celebrates diversity, chasing dreams and embracing inner beauty, “Who Says?” is Gomez’s way of throwing in her own support for the cause: “I’m no beauty queen / I’m just beautiful me / You’ve got every right to a beautiful life,” Gomez encourages throughout the song.
“Twitter and Facebook are really negative for me…within that world is such easy access to people’s feelings..basically it’s to the haters-the people trying to bring you down,” Gomez told Seacrest when explaining the song’s meaning.
With a strolling beat and those catchy “na-na-na-na-na-na” moments in the pre-chorus, Gomez’s latest offering is a refreshingly breezy little ditty. Whether or not the song makes much of an impact outside of the Disney Channel remains to be seen, but with upcoming performances on The Late Show with David Letterman and The Ellen Show, Gomez’s latest might just have the legs to catch on like her fellow contemporaries’ inspirational odes.
As for the singer herself, I stand by my original claim: Of all the Disney starlets, Selena Gomez shines bright as a true role model in my eyes. I love her so much!
“Who Says?” will be released on March 14. (iTunes)
