Dev Hynes Gives Us New Mutya Keisha Siobhan: “Lay Down In Swimming Pools”

MKSMKSMKSMKSMKS.

Mutya Keisha Siobhan, better known as MKS (or the Sugababes 1.0) have been gallavanting ’round the world for well over a year or two now, recording with basically every producer ever—from MNEK to Xenomania to Naughty Boy to Diane Warren—teasing amazing new tracks like “Boys” and performing secret comeback performances.

Most recently, they’ve been holed up stateside with Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), he of Sky Ferreira‘s “Everything is Embarrassing” and Solange‘s “Losing You” legend.

After recording with the girls for the past few weeks, Dev just uploaded a brand new track to share with the world from their last session together. (“The girls felt like having fun at the end of the session, he tweeted.) Well, almost brand new–it’s actually an interpolation of Kendrick Lamar‘s “Swimming Pools (Drank).”

“When I lay down you can bet/I have found where I wanna be,” the girls croon in unison above the disjointed, tripping R&B beat. Murky, moody, faded—it’s essentially like hearing what a MKS cover of Rihanna‘s Unapologetic might sound like (po’ it up, po’ it up…), but with those heaven-sent melodies to keep the track lifted. It sounds amazing. Who’s surprised? (The Siobhan-led “Too much, too many, too little time…” bit toward the end, especially, is a treat.)

Granted, this is just a lil’ somethin’ to keep us satisfied while we wait. (It’s been a long while since they first announced their return last July.) As PopJustice would say…Get On With It, ladies!
