Can I just say? I am so proud of Tinashe. The dream is becoming a reality.
After years of supplying us with those incredible self-released mixtapes, my favorite up-and-coming future R&B-pop darling’s gone and notched herself a bonafide hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts this year with “2 On.” And the DJ Mustard-produced club banger has only continued to dominate throughout the year, thanks to a continuous stream of remixes and features. (Thanks, Drake!)
Last night, a T-Minus-produced cut called “In The Meantime” surfaced online. And while there’s still no need to push out new tunes from her upcoming debut album Aquarius just yet (“2 On” just peaked at #24 last week, in fact), I’m always happy to hear more of what she’s been cooking up for her major label debut.
The bass-heavy slice of seduction layers Tinashe’s fluttery vocals atop tripping drums and light electronic flourishes, continuing her winning #SomethingMoreUrban “2 On” swag. “I need that, you fuckin’ know I do/I need that, I’mma have to show you boy/I’m ’bout to feed you a part of me right now,” she flirts.
There’s no guarantee that this song is part of her upcoming LP, as it does feel like an early demo — especially when the beat comes in for an extended run at the 2-minute mark — but it’s still a promising indication of where her sound is heading. Killin’ ’em, boo!
“2 On” was released on January 21. (iTunes)
