‘Breathe (Acoustic)’: Jax Jones & Ina Wroldsen’s Banger Works Just As Well As a Ballad

The massive club cut works equally well, if not better, as a late night piano ballad.

“I’m not in love. It’s just a thing we make…”

Jax Jones and Ina Wroldsen‘s “Breathe” is a bit of an inevitable smash: Jax is consistently serving up fire for the dance floor across the pond (“Instruction” with Demi Lovato deserves so much more in America), and Ina’s mighty pen is responsible for dozens of pop gems over the years. (She’s also the unofficial sixth member of The Saturdays.)

The song is currently smashing in the UK – several regions across the world, actually – so it makes sense that they’d want to keep the momentum going strong. In this case, beyond commissioning producers and DJs to deal out the remixes, they’ve opted to switch things up with an acoustic version.

Normally, big ol’ pop bangers sound kind of corny when some hopeful slows it down for a super serious-faced take on their The Voice audition. But in this case, the track translates perfectly as a subdued, piano-led contemplation about mixed signals, conflicting feelings and quarter-after-3 AM restlessness.

Plus, Ina’s voice carries so much beautiful fragility and emotion! It’s lovely to hear her at the forefront, stripped of the loud beats, trembling and belting her way across the song – now made all the more devastating, da-da-dums and all.

“Breathe (Acoustic)” was released on February 16. (iTunes)
