“A Oscuras”: Lali & Ptazeta Give Us a Hot & Horny Queer Anthem

The Argentine queen and the Spanish rapper link up for a Sapphic scorcher.

Lali is absolutely rompiendo en este momento.

After releasing her self-titled fifth studio album last year, one of my favorite albums of 2023, the Argentine pop queen (truly, there’s something in the water with Argentine queens especially killing it over the past year) is wasting no time kicking off the top of 2024 with a Sapphic scorcher alongside Spanish rising rap star Ptazeta.

“A Oscuras” (“In The Dark”) is a seductive dance floor anthem, full of throbbing bass, synths and stuttering vocals. It’s a total banger, which is entirely unsurprising given the talent packed onto the project: it was crafted by frequent Ptazeta collaborator and producer of Becky G‘s absolutely amazing “No Mienten” Juacko and Mazzarri and FABV, who just did “Muñekita” with Kali Uchis on her early 2024 Album of the Year contender, ORQUÍDEAS. (This is why analyzing production credits is so much fun for a music nerd. Everything is connected!)

As one might anticipate from a collaboration between an openly bisexual pop star and an openly lesbian rapper, the end result is fierce, queer excellence.

The song is full of lusty, finger-lickin’ good come-ons, as Lali and Ptazeta recall their moan-filled after-hours hook-ups amid some hesitance about how long it’ll last. (Gay culture!)

Like ‘wow, wow’ / Ella se pone así conmigo / Desde el primer día que nos vimos / Dice ‘Nunca me la han comido como tú,” Lali declares in one of the spiciest moments. (Basically, and please forgive my basic-to-intermediate grasp of Spanish: “Like ‘wow, wow,’ she gets like that with me, from the first day we saw each other, she says ‘no one’s ever eaten me like you.'” Eat what? Well. In the words of La Legendtina…you don’t even need a plate, just your face…HA!

Even if the lyrics aren’t in your mother tongue, fear not: there’s enough implied action in the accompanying music video to let you know exactly what their tongues have been up to lately. It’s all set in a hot mansion party scene, complete with killer choreography from Lali – sort of like if Britney and Tinashe hooked up in the “Slumber Party” video and forgot all about that man. (So, the ideal alternate universe.)

Sometimes I get asked about championing music that isn’t in English – be it from Argentina, Spain, Japan, Korea, wherever – which really started when I first got my hands on the Internet as a pre-teen. My question to them is always the same: how could you not be interested in what’s outside of your own culture? There are so many exciting artists to discover out there than whatever your local radio station is playing. It feels so dry and dull to be limited by language barriers (especially in an age of instant translation services), when the output is so obviously good, and often better than whatever’s going on stateside.

Besides, when you press play on something like this, how could you not say cunt? Like, that’s cunt. Like… Actual queer women making sexy, hot music about loving on each other? I love when women! Rompieron reinas!

Excitingly, there’s no slowing down when it comes to Lali’s musical output in 2024, it seems. Just a few days ago, she wrote: “No me alejo de la música. Me voy a meter a hacer el mejor disco de mi vida.” (“I don’t get away from music. I’m going to start making the best album of my life.”)

We love a pop queen, and we really love a pop queen who really loves being a pop queen. Bring it on, Lali!
