ARTPOP Begins: Lady Gaga Announces Single, Album and App Release Date

Lady Gaga is evidently attempting to break a record for the world’s first LMMMI (Little Monster mass myocardial infarction), because she just spilled out her ARTPOP all over the Internet tonight.

The Great ARTPOP Explosion officially began earlier this evening with the reveal of her first look from the new era at an Inez & Vinoodh exhibit in LA tonight, as seen above.

How’s it look? It’s gorgeous, clean and futuristic — all without biting anything too obvious! (Well, mostly.) There isn’t even a single motorcycle in sight! It feels…reduct thoroughly fresh.

But that’s nothin’: Over at LittleMonsters.com, Gaga’s social network, an even more major reveal appeared…

A single release date (August 19!), an album pre-order and app release date (September 1!), and an album release date (November 11!) — all in one go.

And that’s still not all! The Haus of Gaga also supplied a rather lengthy explanation of what’s coming in the upcoming ARTPOP app, which is laid out right here:

Built by TechHAUS, the technological branch of HAUS OF GAGA, the app itself is a musical and visual engineering system that combines music, art, fashion, and technology with a new interactive worldwide community — “the auras”. Altering the human experience with social media, we bring ARTculture into POP in a reverse Warholian expedition.

Exploring Gaga’s existence as a cultural interface, the user will share in the ‘adrenaline of fame’ as they build and share their own projects, chat with one another, and watch in real-time on a virtual globe as ARTPOP explodes onto the physical and virtual universe at once on November 11, our “BIG BANG!” On this day HAUS OF GAGA venges with forte to bring the music industry into a new age; an age where art drives pop, and the artist once again is in control of the ‘icon.’

In turn, the album ARTPOP musically mirrors Gaga’s creative process as she passes through the mediums of each artist she collaborates with, scoring a blueprint of her journey. The result, a “rage” of electronic passion and fury, defining each artistic process from beginning to end, ARTPOP could mean anything. But for her, this is a celebration of obsession. And on November 10, she will host an evening of artRave exhibiting Haus of Gaga’s projects as well as collaborations with Inez & Vinoodh, Robert Wilson, Marina Abramovic, Jeff Koons.

Yeah, uh…I have no fucking idea either. Björk sort of did this with Biophilia, and it was all very complicated. So, I mean, maybe it’s like that! I don’t know. It also sort of sounds like a virus. Also, a “celebration of obsession”? Isn’t that fancy talk for “stanning”? It wouldn’t be Gaga without a healthy serving of pretension, so…there’s that.

App shenanigans aside, this is all very exciting stuff! For one, Gaga’s strategy is pretty unique. Announcing those dates all in a row like that? Unconventionally casual! And this non-promo promo tactic? Silence, and then suddenly dumping out everything all in one go rather than a year of hype? Mercifully succinct!

Without any early hype (don’t say it even if you’ve already heard it, Elton John!), this era’s already shaping up to be miles better than the turbulent times of Born This Way.

Let the countdown to August 19 begin, and remember Gaga…don’t fuck it up.

  1. Ooh La La must have really got to Gag. Talk about trying to steal Godney’s thunder.

  2. Her new “look” is very britney Shape magazine with that hair color, anyways this time she sure doesn’t wanna go completely head to head with the legendary queen of pop miss Britney Spears! She better be scurred

  3. At least when Bjork did something similar, it wasn’t met with some cryptic press release I need the Rosetta Stone to decode…it’s like, just when I feel her sabbatical calmed the masses and made me miss her, she comes back with this bullshit of “passing through the mediums of each artist she collaborates with…”. Is that another way of saying “stealing someone else’s act”?
