As New Year’s Day creeps closer still, what better time than now to look to the future of pop?
Meet Sophia Black, a LA-based singer-songwriter.
If you were “Ooh La La”-ing along with Britney in 2013, you might already recognize Sophia’s name from the Smurfs 2 soundtrack, where she was featured with a perky, fresh pop offering called “Everything Breaks.”
While it’s still early days for the burgeoning singer, she’s in good hands: Sophia’s signed to Dr. Luke‘s Kemosabe Records — home of Ke$ha, Bonnie McKee and GRL — and she’s just put out a brand new track called “Kissing.”
The infectious electro-R&B track is a pretty major departure from her sugary Smurfs 2 soundtrack offering, as her airy vocals seductively wrap above a luscious, late night trip-hop production. “When we k-i-s-s-i-n-g/Boy, your lips got me fly-i-n-g,” she purrs above the twisting Kevin Figs & O.C co-produced beat. It’s just a taste of what’s to come (with a taste of your lips, I’m on a ride…), but a promising one nonetheless.
Here’s to hearing more from Mizz Black in 2014.
“Everything Breaks” was released on July 22. (iTunes)
